A little patience, please.

After two days of messing around with my new camera (crying in frustration for one of those days) I've come to the conclusion that the Nikon Coolpix P500 isn't for me. Don't get me wrong, it's a really awesome camera. It takes very clear and crisp photos of just about everything.. except my makeup products. No matter how much I tried, the color accuracy was off. It was accurate when photographing scenery and people, but when it comes to photographing my lipsticks - nope, no good. My pink lipsticks looked peach and when everything in person looked nice and bright, it photographed dull and neutral. My previous camera photographed everything as I saw it in person.

So now I'm kind of ambivalent about what I should do now. Return this thing and invest a couple hundred dollars more and get a Canon Rebel? Or, just buy another Canon Powershot for the time being.

Anyway, I have so many products that I want to review, but haven't tested them out yet because I want to photograph them first. It's really killing me not to bust open one of these Revlon Lip Butters.

Hopefully I'll get this all figured out very soon as I have so many posts in store for you all!

(For those who wanted to know, my scarf is by Theodora & Callum! I love their scarves.)

Talk to you soon!

  3. My fave Revlon Lip Butter is Peach Parfait, minus the little glitters in it! I also love Strawberry Shortcake. :)

What camera did you have before? FYI, I have a $1,000 camera/lens and I still can't get super accurate pics of red items. I've tried every setting known to man lol. So it happens.

  5. Hi !

I know this is kind of late... but I HIGHLY suggest this camera:

I have a beauty blog as well, and this is the camera I use. The colors are ALWAYS right when photographing my makeup ^_^

    Take a look at it!

  6. I was actually waiting to see what you thought of your camera. I am in the process of getting the canon rebel t3i. Def not cheap, but I have heard great, great reviews. Plus I want good quality.

Good Luck! and let us know what you end up with.

    1. I think I'm a Canon girl. haha! Every camera I've owned has been a Canon, and I think I'm going to stick to what I'm comfortable with - which is why I was kind of looking at the Rebel. It does have fab reviews, so I'm very curious to test it out.

This camera was too heavy too. I kinda knew that prior, but it makes it awkward to photograph myself. I'd probably need a tripod for the majority of my photos, which is a pain. I'm not sure if the rebel is just as bulky/heavy.. I'm sure most dslr cameras are.

Thank you! I'll keep you posted. Hopefully I'll find something tomorrow.

    2. The Canon T3i is very heavy also but it's awesome once you know how to use it.

    1. It is! Yesterday I was literally trying to photograph a few products over and over for HOURS. I wasn't satisfied with any of them. *sigh*

  8. You should just repurchase your last camera. Your blog is so popular and that camera took all the amazing photos people love. It could always be your back up camera when you decide to try out new models too. Well that's my 2 cents anyways lol.

    1. I was thinking about it. I think my old camera was a little too expensive for what it was, but it got the job done very well. It probably went down in price too. I'll most likely do that, and when I have a little extra money in the future, invest in a better camera. Thank you so much for your feedback!

  9. Hi Natalie,

I was just wondering where you got your scarf that you're wearing in the picture you posted? It's AMAZING.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Rene,

I just received it as a gift yesterday - It's by Theodora and Callum. I looked on their website and wasn't able to find my exact scarf, but there are many similar styles that are just as pretty! I love it, it's extra comfy too.

  10. Hi!

I absolutely LOVE that scarf and need it in my life, lol. Please tell me where I can find it. I really enjoy the blog. Your reviews are so detailed and the quality of the pics are a big part of that, so I understand the frustration.

  12. I know your frustration! I got a Canon EOS T3i for Xmas from my husband. I did so much research, printed out the 400 page online manual, watched a ton of YT videos and even bought the book by David Busch and to no avail, all my photos were either too bright or too dark. Then I joined an online forum and I tell you... guys love answering questions from women an feeling like the hero... now I just love my camera.

  13. Hi there, sorry I don't have a camera suggestion, but I'm sure you'll end up with a great one. I also feel like my camera is becoming...sluggish? It used to be able to focus on fine detail pretty quickly, now I have to aim it at an object and wait longer , and it sounds like my camera is just tired, like an old person.

It's also a coincidence that you mentioned lip butters. I just did a post about them. I wasn't going to because it seemed like everybody was sharing their thoughts on the Revlon lip butters, but I like them a lot, so take a look if you're interested. Thanks!

  14. Hi Natalie,
Not sure how much you wanted to spend on a camera, but I have the Nikon 3100 DSLR and it's great! Takes really great makeup photos and I get great, true color. It is pricey but I bought it for the blog knowing I needed to step it up. Good luck in your hunt. :)

  15. The Nikon Coolpix was on my list at Christmas last year. I researched it until I was crazy. Then my cousin who is a photographer said, No Dusty, Go for the Nikon P7000 and I am so glad he did. The Coolpix, you can't operate with a remote and I wanted something I could put on a camera stand and point a remote and shoot self portraits. He was so right and I am so please. It's a little complicated at first but it takes amazing pictures and I got the little remote for 20 bucks at Best Buy. Very please with my P7000.

  16. I'm not sure bloggers really need a "high tech" camera. I have a Canon Powershot and it's absolutely amazing if you play with the settings right!

  17. Bah. D: I don't know what i'd do in this situation. JFKLD;ASJ I hadn't even considered this as a possibility and now i'm scared my rebel won't be accurate. Aaah!

  18. Oh that sucks, if it helps I am using the Canon Rebel XSi on my blog so you can see the pictures are pretty good and the colors acurate :)
It is heavy adn it's hard to take picture of yourself holding it but we get used to it :)
    Good luck...

  21. I bought my Canon Rebel off of ebay for as much as a P500 and it takes amazing product photos with manual focus or auto focus.

  22. You probably don't need a new camera, but a monitor color-calibrating tool such as Spyder. Check Amazon. Most monitors, even brand new, are not calibrated correctly. I'm a wedding and portrait photographer, and this is one of the most important things we have to do before editing.. It only needs to be calibrated once a month or so to maintain accuracy. Use a good photo lab to test for accuracy, like Mpix, who uses the same equipment for consumers as well as professionals.

    1. Oh, and even if you calibrate, most folks don't, so what they see will rarely be what you see. I have many folks that will email me complaining that everyone in their photos look too blue or too red, but I will print them some proofs and they are amazed at how different their photos look from their screen.
