Make Up Forever Mat Velvet + Foundation Review!

Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet Foundation

Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet Foundation ($36) is an oil-free, water-resistant, medium to full coverage foundation with a matte finish. It's an especially good foundation for oily skin types, and for those who enjoy matte finish foundations.

I've been using this foundation for a couple of years now, and I've repurchased it a few times, so I thought I'd write a review for it! It use to be one of my favorite foundations, but I don't reach for it as much anymore because lately I've been preferring dewy finishes.

These are the color matches for the NC30-NC42 range. (I'm in the NC35-40 range)
#30 - For medium skin with beige/neutral undertones. Suitable for NC30 and lighter.
#35 - For medium skin with yellow/beige undertones. Suitable for NC30-NC37.
#40 - For medium-light skin with yellow undertones. Suitable for NC30. (Yes, the numbers can be confusing- it actually appears a little lighter than 35, but more yellow.)
#45 has a beige pink tone and #50 has a pink undertone.. more suited for NW.
#55 - For medium-deep skin with beige/neutral undertones. Suitable for NC40-NC42.
#60 is for medium deep skin w/ beige/pink undertone.. again, better suited for NW.
#65 - For medium skin with yellow undertones. Suitable for NC40-NC43.

I've used both #35 and #40. They both work fine for me. #35 is good for when I'm around NC35, and #40 is good when I'm around NC30; although it isn't as yellow as I'd like it to be. It's on the peachy side. (Comparisons below)

I find that I must moisturize my skin very well before applying this foundation otherwise it doesn't spread well. I also like dampening the bristles of my foundation brush for added moisture. The foundation sets very quickly, so this foundation should be applied in sections. I find that it almost dries too quickly for my liking, because I'll end up having to go back for more foundation several times. A good way to tone down this foundation is by applying it with a damp sponge (or dry sponge for oily) or mixing it with a little bit of a moisturizer.

It's a wonderful medium, buildable to full coverage foundation that doesn't look heavy or fake. Although it has a matte finish, it looks very soft and natural. I don't have to powder when I use this and I don't get oily throughout the day.

It's somewhat comparable to Estee Lauder Double Wear, but it look a little more natural, and photographs better.

Overall, I do love this foundation and will continue repurchasing it. It doesn't irritate my skin and it hasn't broken me out (it's oil free!). It's also great for the summertime as it's water resistant!

Hope you found this review helpful!

  3. I need help. I first bought the #55 but then it was a tad bit too dark for me. And then I bought the #45 and now that one is a tad bit too light for my face. So now I don't know what color to go with :(

    1. Mix the 55 and 45 you have to get the perfect color- like cooking! Mix your own. I never just use 1 foundation.

  4. #and I'm like an olive light tan skin tone. #55 was too dark and #45 was too light. So now I don't know what color to pick... & I love the coverage and everything about it. I'm just having trouble picking the right shade for me. It's always hard for me to match a good shade on my face :(
